About Us

Our Story

WestWinn Urban Ag was formed in 2022. Our urban, indoor farm is based in the former, historic Westinghouse torpedo factory in Sharon, PA. We are led by a veteran farmer with decades of growing experience. We use state of the art aquaponic techniques combined with hydroponic practices to serve the western Pennsylvania and NE Ohio region with natural, sustainable, locally grown, fresh tilapia and produce.

At WWUA, our distinct blend of history, holistic sustainability, culinary excellence, community engagement, innovation, aesthetics, and focus on empowering future leaders sets us apart as a trailblazer in the aquaponics industry.

Our dedication to educational programs, internships, and mentorship opportunities creates a pathway for young innovators to gain practical experience and shape the future of aquaponics and sustainable food systems.

Our Practices

At WWUA we use aquaponic and hydroponic methods, by growing plants without the use of soil. The nutrients completely surround the roots, making it much easier for them to absorb what they need. The plants grow quickly and more abundantly than if they grew in soil. This process often leads to higher yields of fresh produce and is much cleaner than soil growing.

Our tilapia are raised naturally in large tanks by our carefully trained staff. They are fed the highest quality of natural fish food. The fish produce ammonia through their gills and waste, and the ammonia is broken down by beneficial bacteria, creating nitrates which are essential for our plants. Their water is a miracle growth environment for our plants, producing healthy and delicious lettuce and vegetables. Thousands of gallons of water circulate between the fish tanks and the shallow beds where the plants absorb the nutrients from the water through their roots. The nutrient-rich water from the fish provides the natural fertilizer and rich food for the plants. In turn the plants also help to purify the water for the fish.

  • Our controlled environment is managed to give both the fish and the plants the best environment to thrive. Our aquaponic and hydroponic methods will produce the highest nutrient density in the shortest amount of time protected from bad weather, mold, pests, disease and harmful pathogens. Our growing process is chemical-free, pesticide-free which allows the plants and the fish to grow naturally.

The beneficial relationship between our plants, tilapia and bacteria create a sustainable and productive indoor agricultural ecosystem we are proud of.
